Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe or The Arc as it has become known in the UK, was 1st run in 1920 at Longchamp, after a brief hiatus at Chantilly, the race has since returned to the new improved facilities at the re named Paris-Longchamp….
The Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe is the premier race in France for horses of 3 years old and over. It is run over 2,400 metres or 1 & 1/2 miles. It is held on the first Sunday in October.
The Inaugural race was run in 1920 and was won by Comrade, trained by PP Gilpin & ridden by F Bullock.
Between 1920 & 1939, when there was no race for 2 years & in 1941 it was restored to Longchamp, F Carter was the leading trainer with 3 wins from 19 running’s of the race.
A further 2 running’s of the race were held away from Longchamp in 1943 & 1944 at Le Tremblay before it again returned to Longchamp until 2016. The race was held at Chantilly until 2018 due to building work.
The race returned to Paris-Longchamp in 2018 & was won by John Gosden & Frankie Dettori with mare Enable, who became the first horse to win the Arc at both Chantilly & Paris-Longchamp.
2019 winner Waldgeist was the oldest winner of the race at 5yo since 2002, when the race was won by Marienbard.
No 6 year old has won the race & the last 7yo to win the race was in 1932….
The 2020 winner Sottsass, was 4 years old & was Jockey Cristian Demuro 1st win in the race, along with Trainer, Jean – Claude Rouget…
