Favourite Flat race of 2017 – Enable Wins the Investec Oaks

I had two races in mind for my race of 2017, it was between Enable winning the oaks & Big Orange winning at Goodwood. I was Ill when Big Orange won that day & although it really was a cracking race & the final furlong was too & fro, I cannot really remember the race 100%, hence why I have gone for Enable!

Enable Wins the Investec Oaks –  What can I say about Enable that has not been said before? I’m not 100% sure I can add to the superlatives that have already been printed or quoted, so I will just go with this – When you win a race like the Oaks & beat some very, very good horses by 5 lengths to the 2nd then, you either have a superstar on your hands or the other’s were not up to scratch. It is the Latter – Superstar! The other horses in the race have all competed for the rest of the season in Group races.

From the 3 & 3/4 length win on debut in a Newcastle class 5, 1m maiden, in November 2016, Enable was showing signs of something special. Her return to the track in April 2017 at Newbury resulted in her only defeat to Shutter Speed(Who won the Group 3 Class 1 Mussidora Stakes at York) over 1m 2f.

The Cheshire Oaks followed in May, with a 1 & 3/4 length win from Aiden O’Brien’s Alluringly, when stepping up another furlong to 1m 3f. & then it was on to Epsom in June… Over 1m 4f, another step up in trip. Forging clear in the final furlong to end up winning by 5 lengths from Rhododendron & the rest is history….

Since winning the Epsom Oaks by 5 lengths, the smallest margin of victory in the following 3 races has been 4 & 1/2 lengths at Ascot in June from Ulysses, with the largest 5 & 1/2 lengths from Rain Goddess in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh.
