2.05 Betfair Rehearsal Handicap Chase

Aye Right has been a feature in these staying chases, running well more often than not. He was placed in the Ultima off 3lbs higher last spring, and runner-up off this mark in the Sky Bet Chase previously. He had a pipe opener at Kelso last month so shouldn’t be lacking fitness; he looks a great bet at the current prices and will surely give you a run for your money with stamina questions to answer for a few of his rivals.

3.00 Ladbrokes Trophy Handicap Chase

Whilst we remember the glory days of gold Cup horses running here, this years renewal is still a very competitive race. It’s no surprise given recent domination that Irish horses head the betting, and I’m going for the Wilie Mullins trained Ontheropes to land a knockout blow. Runner-up to Monkfish in a Novice chase last term, he won the Munster National a month ago, following the route of Total Recall in 2017. It seems a plan that connections know works and with just 6 chase starts to his name, could well be capable of more improvement, given he was going clear over the bare 3 miles last time out.

1:50 – Ladbrokes Handicap Hurdle – Selection: Master’s Legacy

Philip Hobbs’ Master’s Legacy could be the one to side with in this contest getting the better of an in-form and race fit rival at Chepstow. That was a very similar class 2 race to today and the son of Getaway has only been raised 2lbs in the weights, which must give him an excellent chance of following up today. The step back up to 2m 4f could well bring more improvement from Master’s Legacy and the Hobbs stable are in solid shape at the moment. Any rain that falls won’t concern connections as he has won on soft in the past. I would also give a big each way squeak to Earlofthecotswolds.

2:40 – Living North EBF Maiden Hurdle – Selection: Parisencore

Nearly a dozen horses will line up to contest this 2m Maiden Hurdle and it’s an interesting one. Cool Jet was considered good enough to contest the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham and is a big threat today. However, with a more recent run under his belt Parisencore gets the nod for me. Like quite a few of his rivals today Parisencore remains unexposed and he has the potential to improve further. Softer ground may also suit Parisencore nicely and with a run over hurdles to his name he holds obvious claims. Douglas Talking is another who would softer conditions and is perhaps on the shortlist if you are looking for value in this race.

1.43 Handicap Hurdle – Class 3 -3yo Plus – 2m 128yds
Constanico – Authorized X Senora Galilei 8yo gelding. – NON RUNNER
1 win & 2 places from 7 runs since May 2021. A winner on 3 occasions from today’s mark of 120 ( Oct 2020, June 2019 & Jan 2019) The January win was over C&D, the gelding finished 3rd of 10 in this race last season from a mark of 128. His mark had dropped to 120 by September & has since finished 2nd of 6 & 3rd of 5 from this mark before dropping to 117. His last run was on October 30th at Musselburgh in a Class 4 1m 7f 124yd Handicap Hurdle, winning by 1 length from Sarvi. Has a 5Lb claiming jockey on board today.. Each Way

Newbury –
1.50 – Handicap Hurdle – Class 2 – 4yo Plus – 2m 4f 118yds
Calva D’auge – Air Chief Marshall X Hill ou Elle 6yo gelding.
7 wins & 4 places from 17 runs over hurdles. The gelding has won his last 4 hurdle starts & was a C&D winner in a Class 2 Handicap Hurdle last December. He won at Taunton in April before a break & won on his return last time out at Kempton in a 2m 5f Class 2 Handicap Hurdle by 1 length from Umndeni. Has a 5Lb claimer on board & the pair are 4 from 4 together.. Each Way

WattySpots… Part 2

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of WattySpots.
A feature in which, after each meeting I go to during the jumps season, I will be picking out any horses that have caught my eye, so you can add to your notebooks and hopefully they will go in at a nice price.

Haydock Park

On Saturday I was at my local course, Haydock Park for the 2021 running of the Betfair Chase (other betting exchanges available) and like the majority of the crowd I was in horse and jockey heaven as A Plus Tard and Rachael Blackmore stole the hearts of those in attendance and plenty cash from the bookmakers satchels as she added another Grade 1 to her ever growing list of big race winners.

But apart from A Plus Tard, which other horses caught my eye?
Here are three that went into my trusty notebook & will hopefully get better as the season progresses….. 

Watty with Rachael Blackmore

1 – Chatam Street Lad – 9yo Br Gelding – Trainer : Michael Winters.

Probably an unusual choice you’re probably thinking and you could well be correct but he was given a reasonable ride given that he was rated 19lb below the two who finished ahead of him – A Plus Tard and Royale Pagaille.

However, I think this could be part of a long term plot job by his very characterful trainer in being a Grand National horse, he has three mile form and meets the criteria so it would be no shock to see him run in races like this for his rating to drop just enough to keep him in the top 40.
Come April, he might surprise a few if, that’s the plan with him.

2 – Songino – 4yo B Gelding – Trainer : Paul Nicholls.

A decent third in what was a tight looking Listed Novice Hurdle over 2m, For the record I had a share in the winner, Barrichello.

This was his first British start for the champion trainer and while the ground was probably not in his favour, he looked like this trip was probably on the sharp side and if upped to 2m 4f next time he will certainly strip fitter and show more progression now he has sampled the hurdles over here as opposed to the fixed brush French ones.

Chasing will be his target next season but for now he should make the grade as a good quality novice hurdler

3 – Empire Steel – 7yo Gr Gelding – Trainer : Sandy Thomson.

Twice a winner over fences at Ayr and Kelso last season, this nice looking grey found things a bit difficult at Aintree in April in the G1 Midmay Novices’ Chase, where he pulled up but the form of that race is slowly taking shape and starting to look pretty decent even though of the seven, who set out that day only three came completed the course.

He has the look of an improving staying handicap chaser over long trips and in the 3m 1f Handicap Chase that finished the day off in the gathering gloom, he was only beaten a length and a half by the in-form Strictlyadancer, who was turned out quickly following a Cheltenham win at the November meeting.

Sandy Thomson might be having one eye on a return for next months Tommy Whittle back here, where he could have a big say and potentially go to Ayr for the Scottish National in the spring.
He is definitely one for the trackers.

Plenty of racing about again today with the Grade 1 Lancashire Chase, one of the highlights along with the Stayers Hurdle (Both at Haydock) while at Ascot, the 1965 Chase & the Ascot Hurdle are the main attractions..

2.25 Betfair Stayers Handicap Hurdle

A typically competitive renewal of this Grade 3 handicap, and with bookies paying extra places, I’m siding with 2 against the field at decent each-way prices:

Doctor Duffy has been mainly tried over fences during the past year, but returned to form over timber with a 2nd behind Stratum at Thurles last month after a lay-off. It’s interesting connections keep him over the smaller obstacles for a good prize today, and have already had a winner over these shores last week at Cheltenham. His hurdles mark is 10lbs shy of his chase mark; he could well put his experience to good use here.

Ask Dillon has been a staple in these staying handicap hurdles, yet he arrives here after being outclassed in the Yorkshire Hurdle 3 weeks ago. The positive is he’s been dropped 2lbs by the handicapper and faces slightly calmer waters today. With talented conditional Peter Kavanagh taking 7lbs off, he runs off the same mark as when 4th in last years race. At the current prices he is worth an each-way play.

3.00 Betfair chase

A field of 8 go to post for the first Grade 1 of the National Hunt season, and with 11 of the 12 recent winners coming from the top 3 in the betting, I’m going for the Haydock specialist Bristol De Mai to light up the Lancashire venue once more. His Racing Post Ratings at Haydock for this race read 175, 171, 175 and 182; if he turns up in A1 form one again, I don’t see how Gold Cup runner-up A Plus Tard can beat him, especially considering he’s never won first time out and usually improves for it. It would be some sight were the admirable grey to match Kauto Star with 4 wins in the race, and I’m expecting a huge run in what is always his big day.

3.15 Handicap Chase – Class2 – 4 yo Plus – 2m 167yds..
Before Midnight – Midnight Legend X Lady Samantha 8yo gelding.
3 wins from 3 runs in 2021. His last 2 wins have been over 2m in this class. He won at Chepstow back in April by 3/4’s of a length from Court Royale in a C2 handicap Chase & had a break. He returned at Cheltenham on October 23rd in a 2m C2 handicap chase, when beating Sky Pirate by 6 lengths & has been raised 8 for that win & now runs from 144 today, carrying just 10s 11Lbs, while Sky Pirate runs from the same mark but carries 11s 12lbs….

Haydock –
3.35 Handicap Chase – Class 2 – 4yo Plus – 3m 1f 125yds
Empire Steel – Aizavoski X Talk of rain 7yo gelding.
3 wins from 6 runs since December 2019 & has won first time after a break, the last 3 times. Was last seen pulling up at Aintree in April in the Grade 1 Midmay Novice Chase 3m 210yds, having won at Kelso in a 2m 7f C3 Novice Handicap from Protektorat by 41 lengths, who has since won a Novice Grade 1 Chase & was 2nd to Midnight Shadow in a Grade 3 Cheltenham Handicap last week.
Returns after a break of 225 days….

Cheltenham November Sunday – My Review

This past Sunday I made the short journey to Prestbury Park for the third and final day of Cheltenham’s November meeting. Unfortunately, like many courses, they suffered with smaller than usual field sizes for this time of year.
However, the action was competitive nonetheless, with a couple of the usual players coming to the fore.

The opening Novice Chase was full of drama, with a trio of the five declared runners either falling or refusing, this left the Paul Nicholls trained Threeunderthrufive to hold off Does He Know and reverse the form from Chepstow last month.
Adrian Heskin in the McNeill Family colours had a great partner who showed a really willing attitude from the front, he should be more than competitive in better races as the season goes on.

Speaking of a willing attitude from the front, the passionate Cheltenham crowd were treated to another Bryony Frost special on Yala Enki in the Jewson Handicap Chase. Going two places better than this race last year, the quicker ground made no difference to this 11yo, who will surely have another crack at races like the Welsh National this winter.

Undersupervision

Arguably the best race of the day was the Shloer chase, featuring the past two Champion Chasers in Politologue and Put The Kettle On, however, it was the Dan Skelton trained Nube Negra, runner-up to the Irish mare at the Festival, who was best on the day.

He received a stalking ride from Harry Skelton, pouncing two out to leave the admirable grey, Politologue, settling for second. Put The Kettle On never travelled with her usual exuberance, but did stay on up the hill to take third, I’m sure there will be better days ahead.

There was more success for the Skelton’s in the Greatwood Handicap Hurdle, as West Cork defied a 631 day lay-off to hold off Adagio up the hill, this was despite Harry Skelton dropping his whip after the last. The gelding by Midnight Legend suffered an injury when slipping off the back of the horse trailer last year and missed the season. Connections were quite rightly jubilant after the race with great scenes shown on social media afterwards.

Several horses ran with credit and are worth a follow this term, as mentioned, Adagio finished runner-up under top weight, he may well line-up back here in the Champion Hurdle and wouldn’t be disgraced if he continues to progress. Comprond and Tritonic also were not beaten far, they are still young and relatively unexposed over timber.

With the light fading Paul Nicholls brought up a treble on the day by taking the bumper with Timeforatune, who is still unbeaten for John Hales. I was quite taken by the Fergal O’Brien trained Royal Mogul, who struggled to make an impact, but he looked a lovely type and will likely have learnt a great deal on his first run.

It was a fantastic day at Cheltenham, and after all that has gone on since my last visit pre-lockdown, it truly felt like life was returning to some sort of normality. Roll on my next visit!

Cheltenham 1.45 Jewson Click And Collect Handicap Chase (Grade 3) over 3m 3f 71y

Selection – Empire De Maulde – 7 year old Gelding out of Spanish Moon and Ondine De Brejoux. Has had 25 career starts and has won 10 times. Began racing career in France with 4 wins, one 2nd place finish and one 3rd place from 6 runs back in 2017. Moved to the UK to race for James Ewart and finished 4th on debut at Wetherby on the 23rd January 2018 some 5 and 1/2 lengths behind winner Solo Saxophone. It would be the 15th of January 2019 before Empire De Maulde entered the winners enclosure for the first time on uk soil when beating Dark Ruler by 13 lengths at Newcastle. Won again on next start at Doncaster on the 2nd March 2019 when beating Lazarus by 3 and 1/4 lengths. Next win came on the 2nd September 2020 at Hexham when beating Victory Echo by 6 lengths. Empire De Maulde’s next win came on the 29th December 2020 when beating Gypsy Lee Rose by 1 and 3/4 lengths at Kelso. Next win came on the 11th June this year at Aintree when beating Boughtbeforelunch by 5 and 1/2 lengths. Finished 2nd on next 2 starts at Cartmel when beaten 1 and 1/2 lengths by Dressedforsuccess and at Kelso when beaten 4 and 1/2 lengths by El Borracho. Won on latest start at Kelso when beating Big River by 3 lengths on the 23rd October. Has some good form in the book and looks the likely winner here, biggest threat to the selection comes in the shape of Yala Enki.

2.55 Unibet Greatwood Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3) over 2m 87y

Selection – Tritonic – 4 year old Gelding out of Sea The Moon and Selenography has had 15 career starts winning 4 times, 10 of those races coming on the flat. Won on hurdle debut at Ascot on the 23rd January this year when beating Casa Loupi by 1 length over 1m 7f 152y. Won again on the 27th February when beating Casa Loupi again but by 10 lengths this time around. Finished 5th on next start at Cheltenham on the 19th March when beaten 15 lengths by Quilixios. Finished 4th at Chelmsford on the all-weather on the 29th April when beaten just under 3 lengths by winner Dawaam. Next run came at Ascot and Tritonic finished 8th behind winner Quickthorn. Returned to Cheltenham for latest start on the 23rd October and finished 2nd some 3 and 1/4 lengths behind winner I Like To Move It. Comes into this race in good shape and if reproducing the run shown here in October should be enough to gain another victory and give Alan King another victory to go with him winning this race in 2017 and 2019. Main threat to the selection comes in the shape of Adagio who has a win and 2 second place finishes at Cheltenham.

2:05 – Unibet Morgiana Hurdle (G1) – Selection: Echoes In Rain

There is a familiar feel to this year’s Morgiana Hurdle. The Mullins vs Elliott rivalry and the last two winners of this race are lining up. I think it’s the master of Closutton who holds the ace today. Echoes In Rain my be the lowest rated horse in the field by 7lbs but she is open to the most improvement. Willie Mullins’ Mare gets 7lbs from her four rivals today which could be key today. Echoes In Rain enjoyed a fine campaign last season notching up a hat trick including a cosy Grade 1 win at the Punchestown Festival. Whilst her rivals are all talented and capable of winning this contest they all seem evenly matched to me, I am hoping my selection has the scope to improve past them today. She certainly has to be taken seriously on ground she is proven on.

2:55 – Unibet Greatwood Hurdle – Selection: No Ordinary Joe

Nicky Henderson goes in search of a first Greatwood Hurdle victory with No Ordinary Joe, who remains very unexposed. The son of Getaway has won three of his four races and could well be thrown in somewhat off 10st 12lbs. No Ordinary Joe hasn’t raced in such a big field before but connections obviously think he will cope with it okay. My selection hasn’t been seen since winning very easily at Worcester in May but we all know Nicky Henderson is a master at getting horses hard fit after a layoff. If he copes with the drop back to 2m I think he will be right in the mix. I hope the hype is right.

3.10 Southern National Handicap Chase – Class 3 – 4yo Plus – 3m 3f 149yds…
Gleno – Ask X Lwitikila 9yo gelding.
3 wins & 2 places from 12 Chase runs. His last win was at Chepstow in April, when landing the 2m 7f 131yd Class 3 handicap chase by a short head.
The gelding had 197 days off before returning at Exeter on October 19th, in a 3m 54yd Class 3 handicap chase, finishing a distant 2nd by 34 lengths to From The Heart.
He has 1 win from 3 runs at this course & finished runner up to Christmas at April over 3m 2f in December 2019 & his form over 3m+ reads 2/4/3 (Wind Op) 1/5/2 & has returned to his last win mark of 119…

Punchestown –

3.15 Pertemps (Qualifier) Handicap Hurdle – 4yo Plus – 2m 7f 190yds….
WhatUCallHer – Robin Des Champs X Loyal Gesture 7yo Mare.
2 wins & 10 places from 18 runs. She has had 7 runs in 2021, winning twice & placing on 3 other runs, with running 4 times between April 16th & May 30th. The mare won once in this time at this course over 3m 2f in a handicap hurdle from a mark of 109. The win took her mark to 115, when she was runner up in a 2m 4f handicap hurdle at Killarney in July by 1 & 3/4 lengths.
That was her last run before taking a break of 57 days. She returned at Ballinrobe on September 10th over 2m 5f 181yds in a handicap hurdle, with a revised mark of 118 & won by 8 lengths. Her mark was then raised to 124 prior to her last run at Listowel on September 22nd, in a 3m handicap hurdle. The mare finished 3rd, some 8 & 3/4 lengths behind the winner, Henwick, who has since won a Class 2 handicap hurdle at Sedgefield & 5th MindsMadeUp has also won. Returns after 53 days off track from a mark of 125… EACH WAY

Todays we have the Cheltenham November meeting, along with some AWC qualifiers at Lingfield & plenty of other National Hunt action away from Prestbury Park…

Although we drew a blank with our UK blog last Saturday, there were 4 winner’s & 2 places from the 7 Breeders Cup selections from Del Mar, with us all landing a winner each!

2.50 Paddy Power Games Handicap Hurdle Listed over 2m 7f 208y

Selection – Ballymillsy. 5 year old Gelding out of Lucarno and Brackenmoss. Has had 8 runs and has won twice. The wins have came at Warwick on the 15th February this year when beating Ballymagroarty Boy by 1 and 1/4 lengths with De Young Warrior a further 4 and 1/2 lengths adrift in 3rd. Won again last time out when beating Blackjack Kentucky by 7 and 1/2 lengths at Newton Abbot on the 10th October over 3m 2f and 105y. Looks the one to beat here and if handling the conditions should fare better than the 6th place finish on previous run here back in 2020. Biggest threat to the selection comes in the shape of Proschema from the Skelton yard.

Selection – Lady Excalibur – 4 Year old Filly out of Camelot and Market Forces. Has had 3 starts so far winning twice and placing 2nd once. The wins came at Stratford on 18th July this year when beating Luke San by 8 lengths and on latest start at Aintree on the 24th October when beating Last Of A Legend by 1 length. If handling the track should be hard to beat, biggest threat to the selection comes in the shape of Bonttay who has won last 2 starts for Fergal O’brien.

2.15 Paddy Power Gold Cup

Coole Cody was a game winner of this race last year, and followed up that effort with a solid 4th off 2lbs higher at the Festival. He warmed up for this with a 2nd over hurdles last time (4th has won here yesterday) and should arrive back to Prestbury Park with every chance of running well again.

Spiritofthegames has been a standing dish in these intermediate handicaps over the years and I cant leave him unbacked today. He’s now 4lbs lower than when 2nd in the race last year and should give you value for your bet. Both horses are currently double figure prices and with firms paying extra places, can feature in the money.

3.25 Paddy Power Handicap Hurdle

Good Time Jonny had been getting the hang of things in handicap hurdles, finishing 3rd and then winning last time out at Gowran Park over 2m 4f. The Irish raiders need plenty of respect when handed their UK handicap marks and will likely have something in hand if continuing in fine fettle. Makes plenty of appeal at the current each-way price.

2:50 – Paddy Power Games Handicap Hurdle (Listed) – Selection: Ballymillsy

Another competitive Handicap Hurdle for the punters to get their teeth stuck into. Ballymillsy looks the type to run a big race after a nice win at Newton Abbott last month. Sam & Nigel Twiston – Davies team up with this son of Lucarno who is still relatively unexposed after just 8 races. Ballymillsy is on the improve and bounced back from a fall at Warwick to win a Class 2 Handicap Hurdle at Newton Abbott pretty easily in the end. Good ground is okay for him and everything is set for a big run. Ballymillsy has won over further than today’s 3m trip, so I suspect he will be staying on strongly from the back of the last. Proschema has 11st 11lbs to carry but still rates as the main danger along with the improving Dragon Bones.

Lingfield –
3:05 – Betway Golden Rose Stakes – Selection: Bahrain Pride (Each way)

A field full of quality sprinters has assembled to contest the 15th running of the listed Golden Rose Stakes. Having looked through the contenders it seems wide open and so I am going to side with Bahrain Pride at an each way price. Simon & Ed Crisford’s 3yo has returned from a year off with two solid performances when second at Kempton and Newmarket in Condition Stakes races. My selection will undoubtedly need to up his game to figure here but he is much less exposed than most of his rivals today having had just six races so far. If he can bring his A-game then I don’t think Bahrain Pride will be far away. Everything William Buick touches at the moment turns to gold and hopefully the same happens again. Draw, trip and surface all suit. Current price 11/1.

2.00 Handicap Chase – Class 3 – 4yo Plus – 2m 3f 85yds..

Cracking Destiny – Dubai Destination X Cracking Gale 8yo gelding.
1 win from 3 runs in 2021 with that win coming on August 19th at Stratford in a Class 2 Handicap Chase over 2m 3f 98yds by 1 & 1/2 lengths. He was dropped back in trip on October 3rd at Kelso in a Class 2 Handicap Chase over 2m 1f 14yds & finished 4th to Nuts Well.
The geldings last run was over C&D in a Class 1 Listed Handicap Chase on October 29th & finished 2nd of 10, missing out by 1 & 1/2 lengths. That run was from a mark of 134 & has only been raised to 135, while dropping in Class today… Likely to track the leaders…

3.10 Handicap Hurdle – Class 3 – 3yo Plus – 2m…
Champagne City – Tobougg X City of Angels 8yo gelding.
Has run 3 times since August 22nd when winning at Worcester in a 2m Class 3 Handicap Hurdle by 3 & 3/4 lengths. He was stepped up in trip at Fontwell to 2m 1f 162yds on October 1st in a Class 3 Handicap Hurdle but finished 4th of 5 runners.
His last run was on October 29th over C&D in this class when the gelding finished a 1 & 3/4 length runner up of 10… Likely to front run…

This weekend ( 6 -11-2021 ) just gone I was at Aintree for Grand Sefton Chase Day and here are a few horses that caught my eye during the afternoon……

Limetree Boy, 5yo B G, Jonjo O’Neill.

Making his full racecourse debut in a race of any kind this son of Shirocco ran an encouraging third behind impressive winner Hillcrest in the 2m4f Nov Hdle which was also an EBF Final Qualifier, he shaped nicely and will have learnt plenty, it would be no surprise to see him get laid out for the final in March at Sandown.

Remastered, 8yo Ch G, David Pipe.

Last seasons Reynoldstown winner and 5th in the 3m6f G2 Nov Chase at the Cheltenham behind Galvin, he got headed in the last half furlong of the Pertemps Qualifier but this run will have put him spot on for this months Ladbrokes Trophy at Newbury, he could potentially have a big say in the big staying handicap chases this season and is one to keep an eye on.

Senior Citizen, 8yo B G, Alan King

Alan King has had a stellar year on the flat but while the Grand National may not be a race he relishes he does have a live çhance with this one, second in the Grand Sefton after his Topham third back in April suggests he has to take his chance in the spring and despite being rated 139 going into this race, he should be upped a bit extra especially as he appears to have the “Aintree Factor”

So there we have it, three horses I think you should put in your trackers and notebooks, next Saturday is the Betfair Chase at Haydock and I’ll see what catches the eye and report back on that.

Doncaster 1.25 Virgin Bet Handicap

Selection – Tomfre – 4 year Old Gelding Out of Cable Bay and Kurtanella. Has had 23 career starts winning 7 times, 4 of those wins have came in 7f handicaps on testing ground, including this race last year. With a similar display today should be thereabouts come business end of race. Biggest danger to the selection comes in the shape of Fresh who likes soft ground and will push the selection all the way to the line.

2.15 Grand Sefton Handicap Chase

As is often the case with these races over the national fences it pays to stick with those with experience over them. Cat Tiger finished 3rd in the foxhunters last Spring over this trip. Connections have enjoyed another great start to the season and he’s likely to be primed for a positive run here. A mark of 134 seems fair and is still relatively unexposed as a chaser.

For those who want a slightly bigger price look no further than Sir Jack Yeats, who ran with credit both occasions over these fences last season, when 5th in the Topham, and 2nd in this last December. He runs off the same mark of of 126 today and looks a great each-way play at the current double-figure price.

3:35 – Unibet Elite Hurdle (G2) – Selection: Goshen

I am probably putting my neck on the line here backing Goshen. Gary Moore’s top hurdler is something of an enigma but has the talent to serve it up to the cream of the 2m hurdling crop. Goshen was very impressive over today’s course and distance when winning the Kingwell Hurdle, beating Song For Someone by over 20 lengths. The wheels came off again though at Cheltenham and Punchestown but I am willing to forgive. Connections may like the ground to be a little softer but the wat Goshen travels good ground should be okay. If the real Goshen turns up then he will take some beating. Undoubtedly the main threat is Sceau Royal who is a cracking little campaigner for the Alan King stable and is seeking a hat trick in this race. You also can’t rule out Belfast Banter or Sole Pretender. This is a good contest.

1.40 Novice Handicap Chase – Class 3 – 4yo Plus – 2m 4f…
Hooligan – Alzavoski X Victory Run 6yo gelding.
Makes chase debut after a break of 219 days. Was last seen finishing a 6 length runner up to Berry in a 2m 2f Compiegne Hurdle, the winner has won a pair of Grade 3 Chase’s & 3rd has also won twice since (All in France).
His last run in the UK was back last February, when winning a 2m Handicap Hurdle at Newcastle by 1/2 a length… EACH WAY

Selection – Golden Pal – 3 year old Colt out of Uncle Mo and Lady Shipman. Has had 7 career starts winning 4 times. Was sent off 1/2 fav in the grade 2 Woodford Stakes at Keeneland last time out and beat Extravagant Kid by 2 and 1/4 lengths over 5f. Won the juvenile sprint last year and looks to build on that success by winning the Turf Sprint this year, biggest danger to the selection comes in the shape of Lieutenant Dan who has won 4 times from last 5 starts.

10.20 FanDuel Breeders Cup Mile

A strong European challenge here, but I’m sticking with the home team and Mo Forza. This Uncle Mo colt has won 8 from 9 and is a perfect 3/3 around Del Mar on the turf. Drawn in 6 he should be able to track the early pace and pounce late for jockey Flavien Prat, who is more than useful around here.

11.40 Longines Breeders Cup Turf

Yibir has enjoyed a successful season and has already taken home a prize from these shores in the Jockey Club at Belmont over this trip. Connections will hope for a proper gallop as he’ll be closing them down on the run-in if his previous 2 wins are anything to go by. It looks a fascinating race and this will require a career best, but he looks a solid each-way bet at the current prices.

8:59 – Breeders Cup Filly & Mare Turf – Selection: Loves Only You

A dozen Fillies & Mares take on this 10f test. There is plenty of European interest headed by Love and defending champion Audarya. However, a raider from Japan has caught my eye and brings in some very smart form. Loves Only You has continued to improve throughout 2021 and has bagged a 10f Group 1 in Hong Kong’s Queen Elizabeth II Cup back in April. Although it was arguably even better performance when the daughter of Deep Impact finished a tight third behind Mishriff in Dubai, she was only beaten a half length and Walton Street was back in fourth. Her prep run back in Japan was a decent second and if she runs up to the Sheema Classic form then she will go close. Connections obviously think she will handle Del Mar well. Has good form on quick ground. Acanella may be worth an each way punt for Lyons and Keane.

12:40 – Breeders Cup Classic – Selection: Essential Quality

The main event sees a field of nine to post as the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes winners take on the top older horses. I have liked Belmont victor Essential Quality for this race all week and I’m not changing my mind now. Brad Cox’s popular grey looks to have the required speed and stamina for this test having won the Travers over 1m 2f and the Belmont over further. Essential Quality should be right up with the pace and can hopefully use his stamina late on. The son of Tapit has had a nice break since August, so all is set for a big run and perhaps crucially he gets 4lbs from Knicks Go. Medina Spirit is a big player in my opinion for Bob Baffert and Hot Rod Charlie who stays very well. What a race this promises to be.

Going Global – Mehmas X Wrood 3yo filly.
Former Michael Halford’s runner has thrived in America, winning 5 of her last 6 starts.
She has risen though the ranks, winning stakes races & going up through the Grades.
She landed the Grade 3 Santa Anita Providencia Fillies’ Stakes in April, In May she landed the 1m 1f Grade 3 honeymoon Stakes before taking a break. On return after 63 days away, she finished 2nd to Madone in the Grade 2 C&D Sun Clemente Stakes in July before taking the 9f (1m 1f) Del Mar Oaks (Fillies’ Grade 1 ) from Closing Remarks in August, which over turned the form with Madone…
DANGER – Princess Grace – 2 from 2 in 2021 & landed the Yellow Ribbon H. Stakes at thie course over 1m 110yds (8 & 1/2F) in August & won the Kentucky Ladies Turf Grade 3 over 1m on September 11th from Dalika….

9.38 ( R 8) Breeders Cup Sprint – Grade 1 – 3yo Plus – 6f….

Dr, Schivel – Violence X Lil Nugget 3yo colt.
Comes in to this race on the back of 5 straight wins, including over C&D in August when landing the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes from Eight Kings. Had a 63 day break before landing teh Grade 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship from Flagship on October 3rd.

DANGER – Jackie’s Warrior – Favourite to land the race & has won his last 2 starts including the 7f Grade 1 H. Allen Memorial Stakes at Saratoga in August. Landed a Philadelphia Stakes race on September 25 by 6 & 3/4 lengths..

My day out at Down Royal for Champion Chase Day

I woke up on the morning of Saturday 30th October with great excitement as I was heading to my local course Down Royal for their biggest day of the year and my first day at the races in nearly two years. With a quality line up featuring the Gold Cup & King George winners plus Envoi Allen, I was keen to make the most of it and so were the 6,000 strong crowd who generated a fabulous atmosphere throughout the day. It takes roughly 45 minutes to travel to Down Royal from home and I arrived through the turnstiles at about 12:20, enough time before the first race at 1:05 to soak up the atmosphere and spot any trainers, jockeys or maybe even a local celebrity or two.

I asked a legend of Irish racing for a photo, Mr Ted Walsh. A gentleman and a fine pundit for RTE Racing. Thankfully the photography skills of my Father are not too shabby. Unfortunately the sun was so bright I could barely even squint!
 

Before the first race we had a quick wander through the stable car park to see all the lorries, then Thousand Stars and Katie Walsh strolled past, unfortunately I wasn’t quick enough with my camera but the old boy looked in fine fettle.

Race 1 – Value Cabs 3yo Hurdle

The opening race on Ladbrokes Champion Chase day looked a bit of a tame affair as six 3yo’s went to post. According to the betting Fils Dor and Sea Sessions would be battling out the finish. In the parade ring I thought Sea Sessions stood out more than Fils Dor but it was anything but that out on the track as Gordon Elliott’s new French recruit Fils Dor won virtually on the bridle by 16 lengths, a great start for me as I put him up on the blog. I look forward to following Fils Dor’s progress throughout the months and weeks ahead. Perhaps he could be a Triumph Hurdle or Fred Winter horse?

 
Race 2 – Tayto Group Maiden Hurdle 

It was the Elliott stable to the fore once again as Mighty Potter was backed off the boards as the 4/9 Fav. In a 20 runner Maiden Hurdle he stood out amongst the field due to his size and scope. The race went smoothly for the favourite under Jack Kennedy as he loomed up large approaching the second last as stablemate The Greek was upsides and under pressure, a fall at the second last for The Greek unfortunately put Davy Russell out for the rest of the day. Mighty Potter cleared the last safely and won by a street. He will make a fine chaser one day but he could still take high rank in the novice hurdling division this season and the vibes from his trainer suggests he thinks so too.

Race 3 – Dr Emma Clinics Handicap Hurdle

The sun continued to beat down on the Lisburn track as 12 horses went to post for a competitive and valuable (24,000 Euro to the winner) Handicap Hurdle. Eskylane was on many people’s notebooks for this race after a pleasing run at Listowel after a break, while JP McManus also had a three-pronged attack headed by Magic Tricks. As the field headed down the incline towards the second last Eskylane and Magic Tricks had made eye-catching progress. Eskylane asserted clear going to the last and pulled away on the run to make it 3/3 for the Elliott stable on the day. Which lead to the inevitable talk of whether Gordon could go through the card.

Then it was time for the race we had all been waiting for at 2:50…

Race 4 – Ladbrokes Champion Chase (Grade 1)

As the runners entered the paddock ahead of the big race there was a huge buzz around the place, the tension and excitement levels about might unfold out on the track was sky high, the hype on this occasion was right! Beforehand I had noticed that Minella Indo was carrying a bit of condition, whilst Frodon and Galvin looked tighter and more ready for this test. Frodon jumped off from the front and it was a privilege to witness a fantastic race as Frodon showed his trademark tenacity to repel Galvin after the last and seal a famous win, the crowd really got behind Bryony and Frodon as they roared them home, the atmosphere was electric and made the day for me. Minella Indo & Delta Work ran fine races too. Frodon and Bryony got a brilliant reception in the winner’s enclosure too.

It was another great chapter in the history of Northern Ireland’s biggest horse race.

Race 5 – Join Racing TV Chase (Grade 2)

There was much anticipation still lingering in the air as Envoi Allen was about to grace Down Royal for the third time in as many years. The prospect of the dream team of Envoi Allen & Rachel Blackmore teaming up was mouth-watering to say the least. This appeared to be somewhat of a penalty kick for Henry De Bromhead’s superstar being sent off at 4/11. And so proved as it was a very comfortable success for Envoi Allen, it was great to see him bouncing back to form after a bad end to last season. An appreciative crowd clapped and cheered him home up the straight. I was keen to get to the winner’s enclosure and get some photos of such a wonderful horse. The smile on Rachel’s face said it all, she must have gotten some buzz on his back.
As the winner of the best dressed lady competition was revealed I took a good vantage point at the last fence for the sixth race.

Race 6 – Barclays Communications Handicap Chase

The sun began to get lower in the sky and a big black cloud was about to pass over the course as another competitive handicap of 12 runners was about to get underway. Thankfully the rain wasn’t too heavy as the favourite Weststreet was well backed into 11/4 and looked a nice individual in the parade ring but the bookies got a bit of relief after a tough day for them as 11/1 shot Mindsmadeup produced a terrific round of jumping from the front to beat the favourite by a length. You could say he rained on the favourite’s parade!
 
That would be the last race I would see today as myself and my dad who joined me in getting tickets wanted to beat the traffic out. We left the course very happy and a bit hungry, the queue at the bar and food area was too long for our liking and was the only downside to a great day, we stopped off at a petrol station on the way home and raided the crisps section! After such a long time away it was a great buzz to be back at Down Royal and to see some champion racehorses and potential future stars in the flesh. It’s a day that will live long in my memory and I’m sure many of the 6,000 strong would agree.
