Ascot, Wetherby & Down Royal

Hello & Welcome to Arseonlineracing..
The 100% independent racing website with NO affiliate links…

Today we have a couple of big grade National Hunt races with the Charlie Hall Chase (Grade 2) at Wetherby & Champion Chase (Grade 1 ) at Down Royal in Northern Ireland with plenty of other Graded & Listed races on the cards, which take in Ascot, Wetherby & Down Royal.

A packed day of racing for us ALL to get our teeth into & with the 4 of us back, for the first time since August, today promises to be a very good day…

Jamie will be at Down Royal & will review the meeting this week for us, so keep an eye out for that!

Many Clouds & the colours of the late Trevor Hemmings – Fran Altoft

Back to today & as previously mentioned we have covered Ascot, Wetherby & Down Royal for you, so LET’S GET STARTED!

Going….
Ascot – Good to Soft
Wetherby – Good to Soft, Good in Places
Down Royal – Yielding

Charlie –

Wetherby

1.55 Bet 365 Mares Hurdle ( Class1 Listed ) over 2m

Selection – Zambella – 6 year old Mare Out of Zambezi Sun and Visby. Has had 15 races under rules and has won 6 times in total, 3 of those wins were over fences and 2 wins over hurdles. Although the hurdle wins were back in 2019, if recreating the form of those 2 hurdle wins should go close today, biggest danger to the selection comes in the shape of the Paul Nicholls trained Miranda who has a 50% strike rate over hurdles and carries 6lb more for todays race.

Chris –

Ascot

2.10 Bateaux London Handicap Hurdle

Soaring Glory enjoyed a comfortable success in the Betfair Hurdle last season, before finishing 4th in the Supreme, he arrives here 10lbs higher than and will need a career best to defy this mark. With that said, he’s only a 6yo and this will be just his 7th start over timber. He also goes well here having never been out the top 3 and his record fresh is extremely positive. I’m expecting this son of Fame And Glory to be in the shake-up after the final flight.

3.20 Bateaux London Gold Cup Handicap Chase

Regal Encore has been a staple of National Hunt racing over the years, especially here at Ascot. His recent chase form here reads 13213132 including a win in this race last year and beaten by just a head back in February. This 13yo shows no signs of slowing up and it would be a magnificent training performance from all at the Anthony Honeyball yard were Regal Encore to land this. Off todays mark of 149 and at the current double figure price he makes plenty of each-way appeal.

Ascot

Jamie –

1:05 – Value Cabs 3yo Hurdle – Selection: Fil Dor

This appears to be a weak renewal of this race and Gordon Elliott can sweep up once again, the County Meath trainer has won 4 of the last 6 renewals of the race. The Elliott stable usually runs one of their smartest Juvenile hurdlers in this and French import Fil Dor is decently bred being a half brother to a listed winner and a chase winner. The son of Doctor Dino was second in a French bumper in June and is making his debut over hurdles today. Sea Sessions is the big threat having finished a good second on her hurdles bow at Punchestown last time out, she is rock solid and boasts race fitness. It won’t be easy giving her 6lbs but I can’t ignore the promise of the Fil Dor and I fancy him to get off the mark today.

2:50 – Ladbrokes Champion Chase (G1) – Selection: Frodon

The first Grade 1 race of the jumps season sees reigning the Cheltenham Gold Cup & King George VI Chase go head to head. Due to the easy 3m nature of Down Royal I am siding with King George hero Frodon. You would like to think Paul Nicholls will have him well tuned up for this race and this represents a good opportunity to notch up another success at the highest level. Of course, Frodon has over 30 lengths to find with Minella Indo from Cheltenham but Down Royal over 3m is a very different test to Cheltenham over 3m 2½f, I am not sure Down Royal will suit Minella Indo as stamina appears to be his forte, while Frodon handles these tighter courses well. Galvin is race fit but may lack the class of the big two. Frodon will be a tough nut to crack and always gives his all. I’m very excited and lucky to see this race in person today.

Ascot –
2.45 Handicap Chase – Class 1 Listed – 2m 167yds…
Sully D’oc AA – Konig Turf X Samarra D’oc 7yo Gelding.

Had wind surgery in early 2020 before returning on October 31st 2020 at this meeting after 280 days off, winning in a 2m 2f Class 3 Handicap Chase.
Finished 3rd at Newbury on November 27th in a Class 2 Handicap Chase, given a break of 111 days before heading to the Cheltenham Festival, where he finished a 13 & 1/2 length 8th of 21 in the Grade 3 Handicap Plate Chase 2m 4f before finishing a 1 length runner up at Aintree in the Grade 3 Red Rum 1m 7f Handicap Chase on April 8th to Editeur Du Gite.
Was last seen at Punchestown on April 29th winning a Grade B 2m Handicap Chase by 2 & 1/4 lengths. Off for 184 days. Season Return – EACH WAY

Wetherby –
4.50 Handicap Chase – Class 4 – 3m 45yds…
Ecossais – Saddler Maker X Sacade 7yo Gelding.

Had been on the go since October 2020, running 8 times & winning 3 of them. Landed back to back wins in 2020 before opening 2021 with a pair of 3rd place finishes.
Last won on March 8th 2021 at Southwell over 3m by 3/4’s of a length in a Class 4 Handicap Chase before ending his season at Sedgefield on March 28th in a 3m 2f Class 4 Hnadicap Chase, when finishing a 19 length 2nd to Gran Paradiso, with 3rd William of Orange, winning twice since that race..
Off for 219 days. Season Return. – EACH WAY

That is everything for you today folks, thanks for popping by & for your continued support, we all really appreciate it..

Chris –

Cheltenham Good

1.45 – NHS Vaccinating Heroes Conditional Jockeys Handicap Hurdle

Samba Dancer has made smooth progression in 3 starts since moving across the Irish Sea to join the O’Brien-Mcpherson operation, winning twice recently including at handical level at Statford. He was well on top that day and a 6lb rise should not stop him running well again in deeper waters today. He’s not been missed in the betting but the yard know how to produce a winner or two at this meeting and must go well here.

4.40 – Mick Turner A Lifetime In Racing Novices Chase

Roi De Dubai has been a horse to follow this summer, winning and placing twice each since switching to the larger obstacles. His neck 2nd last time out at Perth off a mark of 142 makes him a key player in this lineup. This 9yo son of Dubai Destination can put that experience to good use and represents connections who won a race here yesterday. At the current prices he looks a solid each way bet to nothing.

Rich –

Doncaster – Soft

2.05 – Scott Dobson Memorial Handicap – Class 3 – 3yo Plus – 7f 6yds…
Fools Rush In – Mehmas X Faddwa 3yo gelding.

8 runs in 2021, with 4 wins & 1 place.
Started the season at Haydock, with a handicap mark of 79. He won on return in a 7f Class 4 handicap by 2 & 3/4’s of a length in June. A winner over 6f at Chester in a Class 4 Handicap in July before stepping back up to 7f & landing back to back races at Haydock (August 7th) in a Class 3 Handicap before a 7f Class 2 Handicap at Chester (August 21st).

His last run was on October 11th at Musselburgh in a Class 2, 7f Handicap from a mark of 95, he finished 2nd that day by a neck to Zip..
Has won on Good to Soft & Heavy ground, so that is no issue & is running from the same mark of 95… – EACH WAY

Kelso – Good (Good to Soft in Places)

2.09 – National Hunt Maiden Hurdle – Div 2 – Class 4 – 4yo Plus – 2m 51yds…
Without Conviction – Alzavoski X With Conviction 6yo Mare.

Debut hurdle season having finished 3rd on 2 runs in 2020, when running in National Hunt Flat (NHF) races.
She made her hurdle debut over 2m 1f at Carlisle in a Maiden Hurdle back in April. finishing 7th of 12, with the first 5 home all winning since,
Her last run was at this course on April 11th, in a 2m 2f Novice Hurdle, when finishing a 6 & 1/4 length 3rd.
The ONLY mare in the race & runs from bottom weight of 10st 11Lbs…

That is everything for you all today folks, we really appreciate your support & for popping by, it means a lot to the team… Thank You

3.20 Market Rasen Symphony Group Prelude Handicap Chase over 2m 5f 88y

Selection – Casablanca Mix – 9 year old Mare Out of Shirocco and Latitude, has had 28 races winning 9 times and placing on a further 9 separate occasions. The wins have came on mostly good to soft ground although has won on Heavy back in 2015 and 2016. Last win came on the 7th of December 2019 at Aintree when beating Holly Flight by 15 lengths in the Class 1 Listed Houghton Mares Chase over 2m 3f 200y on Good to Soft Ground. Only ran 3 times last season finishing 2nd at Chepstow and Market Rasen before finishing 4th at Doncaster on latest start. Has won off this mark previously and should be thereabouts again today, biggest danger to the selection comes in the shape of Senior Citizen who has a similar profile.

.

Jamie –

1:25 – Qipco British Champions Long Distance Cup (G2) – Selection: Hamish

This looks to be one of the strongest ever renewals of this 2m contest, now in it’s tenth year. Whilst Trueshan & Stradivarius slugged it out in the Parisian mud two weeks ago, Hamish has been kept fresh for this race and that could be key. William Haggas’ charge is very lightly raced for a 5yo, with just 8 races under his belt. Hamish brings some smart form to the table, notably a victory over Hukum in the 12F September Stakes last time out. The step up to 2m is an obvious question mark but it could well bring out improvement in Hamish who is a winner at a good level over 1m 6f. I also just think with some of rivals today perhaps feeling the effects of a long season he might well be worth chancing today on ground that he favours. He is as fresh as a daisy for this task.

3:50 – Qipco British Champion Stakes (G1) – Selection: Mishriff

Defending Champion Addeybb has a lot on his plate if he is to retain his crown as Derby winner Adayar and Juddmonte winner Mishriff pose big threats. Over 10F a trip Mishriff has been deadly at this season, I fancy him to overturn that King George form with Adayar. The ground staying relatively solid (good to soft) is ok for John & Thady Gosden’s superstar. Adayar has only had 13 days to recover since a hard fought 4th place finish in the Arc and this trip is more in favour of Mishriff, but I still expect a big run from Charlie Appleby’s 3yo, while I feel the ground isn’t soft enough for Addeybb. Mishriff is a worthy favourite and if he brings his A game, like he did at York last time out when demolishing the field then he holds big claims.

4:30 – Qipco Balmoral Handicap – Selection: Raise You (Each Way)

The lucky last on Champions Day sees a field of 20 go to post for this mile contest. The betting suggests the bottom weight Sunray Major could be a good thing so I am looking for each way potential. At 14/1 Raise You a Joseph O’Brien trained son of Lope De Vega makes some appeal. Raise You is a 3 timer winner from 12 races and has got some decent form at Handicap level, including a solid 5th at the Galway Festival last time out and a good win in a competitive Curragh heat back in April. He goes well fresh and will relish a fast gallop today. The ground holds no fears and judging by his Galway finishing effort then Ascot’s stiff finish will suit well. I am hoping Raise You can go well at a good each way price. He ticks plenty of boxes. Another horse I like is Symbolize, who I feel is too big a price.

Ascot –
2.00 Champion Sprint Stakes – Group 1 – 3yo Plus – 6f…

As one season ends another starts…

Hello & Welcome to Arseonlineracing…
The 100% Independent racing website with NO affiliate links

As the flat season draws to a close, the National Hunt season started yesterday at Chepstow. The nights are drawing in & the clocks will soon be falling back on Halloween….

We have plenty to get stuck in to today, so lets get started…
Charlie, Jamie & Rich have you covered!

Todays GOING –
Newmarket – Good
Chepstow – Good
Hexham – Soft
York – Good to Soft

Charlie –

Newmarket

4.45 – Darley Stakes (Group 3) over 1m 1f

Selection – Mostahdaf – 3 year old Colt out of Frankel and Handassa. Has had 5 career starts winning 4 times, beginning with a 4 and 1/2 length victory over Ego Trip at Newcastle on the 16th March. Was then sent to Kempton for next start and won again, beating Imperial Sands by 1/2 length on the 5th April. Won again on next start at Sandown on the 20th May when beating Highland Avenue by 1/2 length. Was badly hampered on next start at Ascot on the 15th June finished 12th as a result of that interference. Resumed winning ways at Sandown on latest start in listed company, when beating Escobar by 1/2 length on the 15th September. If showing up in same mindset for todays race should be thereabouts again, biggest danger to the selection comes in the shape of Barney Roy who has won 3 times in last 5 starts.

.

Jamie –

Chepstow

2:25 – Native River Handicap Chase – Selection: Cap Du Nord

The Jumps season is beginning to hot up and this Handicap Chase sees the return of some good horses. The locally trained Cap Du Nord enjoyed a fine campaign last season and looks on a competitive mark for his first race of the season. He may be the second string today from the Christian Williams stable, but he can get closer to his stable mate Kitty’s Light due to the decrease in distance from Sandown’s Bet365 Gold Cup. 2m 7½f on good ground should suit Cap Du Nord down to the ground. The form of his second to Royal Pagaille at Christmas last year reads well. Cap Du Nord is a reliable sort and he has his ground today. At around 8/1 he makes some each way appeal. The Mighty Don won at this meeting last year and can also go well at at a decent price.

Hexham

2:45 – Campbell & Rowley For Corporate Events Handicap Hurdle – Selection: Sheriff Garrett

An interesting little Class 3 Handicap Hurdle is the fourth race on Hexham’s card today. Course specialist Sheriff Garrett should give us a good run for our money today. The Triple course winner has ran twice here recently over a slightly shorter distance than today’s 2m 7½f test, finishing second and third. Unlike quite a few in here he has race fitness on his side and the step up in trip should help him. Soft ground holds no fears as Sheriff Garett has won here on soft going in the past. He shouldn’t be too far away on his previous form. Irish raider Dakota Beat is an intriguing rival whilst Justatenner is another big danger.

Rich –
My 2 are all about POTENTIAL for the future…

Newmarket –
2.20 Autumn Stakes – Group 3 – 2yo Only – 1m…
United Nations – Galileo X Christmas Kid Colt.

1 run to today, which was on September 16th at Naas in a 7f Maiden. The Galileo colt won by 1 & 1/4 lengths, leading from 2f out & staying on through the line. The 3rd from that race has since won a 1m maiden at Navan. Today he steps up to 1 mile & takes on some more experienced horses & could spring a surprise.
Plenty of potential for 2022… EACH WAY

Chepstow –
3.30 Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle – Grade 3 – 4yo Plus – 2m 3f 100yds…
The Wrekin – Shirocco X Sapphire Flame 5yo gelding.

4 hurdle starts in 2021 with 3 wins & a runner up place. Hurdle debut was over 1m 7f at Ludlow in March in a Novice hurdle, class 4, finishing 2nd. He has since won at Ludlow (1m 7f) & Warwick (2m 5f) both Class 4 novice hurdles, so todays trip is no issue.
Was a last time out winner at Heham in a class 3 2m Novice Hurdle on June 12th, going on by 1/2 a length.
Big step up in grade today but has plenty of potential… EACH WAY

That is everything for you today folks…. Thanks for taking the time to pop by & we really appreciate your support.
7PM Tomorrow we will be publishing OUR NH to follow page, with our friends on Twitter….

Longchamp – Arc Day

Welcome to Arseonlineracing’s coverage of Longchamp – Arc Day…
This website is 100% independent & has NO affiliate links…

Longchamp has 7 Group 1 races on offer today, they include the Prix De L’Arc De Triomphe, Prix de L’Abbaye & Prix de la Foret amongst them. It signals the end of the French Flat season & with the 100th running of the Arc, it gives someone a chance at history…

Charlie, Jamie & Rich will try & give you the best coverage of the card, we also go HEAD TO HEAD in the BIG race at 3.05 ( Which is LIVE on ITV)
We have taken 2 races each…. ALL 7 Group 1 races on the Card, including the Arabian Group 1….

1.15 – Prix Marcel Boussac (Fillies) Group 1 – 2yo Only – 1m…. Rich

Zellie – Wootton Bassett X SaraiWINNER 4/1SP
3 wins & 2 places from his 5 starts in her debut season
Landed a 7f Deauville Listed Stakes in July before 2 runner up spots.
In August she finished 1 & 1/2 lengths behind Oscula in Group 3 company & Last time out she finished 1 & 1/2 lengths behind Fleur D’Iris on September 9th over C&D. Her form on very soft ground is 2 from 2 & Wootton Bassett love the mud…. EACH WAY

1.50 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere – Group 1 – 2yo Only – 7f…. – Jamie

Selection: Accakaba

France’s championship 2yo race sees a field of 9 going to post. The heavy ground will hinder some more than others and my selection Accakaba has won on soft ground (last time out) and remains unbeaten. Accakaba, a daughter of Acclamation is 4/4 and she progressed from the provincial racecourses of France onto the main stage of Deauville, where she did just enough to win a G3 last time out beating Fleur D’Iris who boosted the form next time out and goes in the Boussac today. That form on soft ground gives her a chance, as well as the 3lb weight allowance she receives which could make a big difference on tiring deep ground today. It is also significant that connections have chosen this race over the Prix Marcel Boussac. Ebro River is a worthy favourite and Coolmore’s Ancient Rome is another big danger. 4TH

2.25 Arabian World Cup – Group 1 – 3yo Plus – 1m 2f….Rich

Ebraz – Amer X Massamarie 8yo horse.
2 runs in 2021 have yielded 2 wins. Landed an Arabian 1m 1f 97yds Group 3 at La Test De Buch by 3/4’s of a length in July before finally landing a Group 1 race over C&D, which was a 2nd C&D win. He beat Artemis by a head in the Group 1 Dragon Arab Stakes.
Winner of this race in 2019 & was 3rd last year…. 4TH

3.05 Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe – Group 1 – 3yo Plus – 1m 4f…
HEAD TO HEAD….

Jamie
Selection: Snowfall
A star studded field of 15 line up to try and capture Europe’s most glittering prize. Deep ground has made it a bit more tricky for punters but I am still siding with Snowfall who bombed away to win the Oaks on soft ground. It will be even more testing today at Longchamp but I think the dual Oaks winner has the weaponry to cope with such conditions. A surprising defeat in the Prix Vermielle wasn’t the ideal prep but I think Aidan O’Brien will have left something to work on and I expect Snowfall to be back to her best today, which she will need to be. A replcation of that Epsom performance would put her with a major chance. 3yo Fillies have a great record in this race too, I am hopeful. Godolphin pair Adayar & Hurricane Lane command respect while Tarnawa has been laid out for this race and has won on heavy. What a race folks, enjoy!

Rich –
Alenquer – Adlerflug X Wild Blossom 3yo Colt.

2 wins from 4 runs in 2021 with 2 places. Made a winning return in April at Sandown in the Group 3 (1m 2f) Classic Trial, beating Adayar by 1/2 a length (Winner of Derby & King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes) before landing the Group 2 King Edward VII Stakes in the Mud at Ascot by 1 & 1/2 lengths in June, having returned from a 56 day break.
He stepped in to Group 1 company over C&D in July when finishing 3rd of 11 to Hurricane Lane in the Grand Prix De Paris (since landed the St Leger Stakes) by 7 & 1/2 lengths before finishing runner up to Mishriff, by 6 lengths (1m 2f) in the Juddmonte International in August.. EACH WAY

Charlie

Selection – Raabihah – Sea The Stars X Garmoosha filly, has had 10 starts winning 4 times on ground ranging from good to heavy. Although has only won 1 time from 4 visits to longchamp has finished 2nd here twice. Comes here off the back of a win at Deauville in a group 2 on the 22nd August when beating Joie De Soir by 2 and 1/2 lengths with Valia a short neck behind in 3rd. Currently available at around 28-1 and is an eachway selection.
ALL 3 UNPLACED – 80/1 winner

.

3.50 Prix de l’Opera – Fillies’ & Mares’ Group 1 – 3yo Plus – 1m 2f…. – Charlie

Selection – Sibila Spain– Frankel X L’Ancresse filly who has won 3 of her 5 starts on ground ranging from good to heavy. Has only raced here on 2 occasions beginning on the 24th May this year when finishing 4th behind Incarville in the Group 1 Prix Saint Alary over 1m 2f, only 2 heads and 1/2 length separated the 1st 4 home that day on Very Soft Ground. More recently won here on the 2nd September when beating Omina Munda Mundis by 2 and 1/2 lengths with Light Stars a further length behind in 3rd. Currently available at around 6-1 and is an each way selection due to being drawn wide. UNPLACED

.4.25 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp – Group 1 – 2yo Plus – 5f…. – Jamie

Selection: Suesa

Softening ground conditions will be music to the ears of the connections of Suesa, who has proved herself to be the top French sprinter this season with group race victories at Chantilly (soft) & Goodwood (good to soft). Suesa is a worthy favourite and despite the draw bias working against her I can envisage Oliver Peslier swooping down the outside late in the day. It was a great effort to finish fourth in the Nunthorpe last time out on ground that was too quick for Suesa, she has ground to make up on Winter Power from that day but the ground is now in Francois Rohaut’s 3yo Fillies favour and if she is in top form then she will give us a good run for our money today.

5.00 Prix de la Foret – Group 1 – 3yo Plus – 7f…. – Charlie

Selection – Sagamiyra – Sea The Moon X Saghaniya filly. Has had 10 carer starts and won 6 times on ground ranging from good to heavy. Won a Group 3 here last time out when beating Axdavali by 1 length with Speak Of The Devil a short neck behind in 3rd. Has a tough task facing the inform Space Blues today who has won 9 times from 17 starts, but at 11/2 at time of writing Sagamiyra could outrun that price in the testing conditions.

Thanks for popping by & for your continued support, we all really appreciate it…

Charlie –

Ascot 3.50 Equine Productions “The Fall” Challenge Cup (Heritage Handicap)

Selection – River Nymph – 4 year old Colt out of Cable Bay and Little Nymph. Has had 12 starts and has won 4 times. Won here 3 starts back in the Victoria Cup, when beating Eagleway by 1/2 length with Escobar a head behind in 3rd. If repeating that today can gain another victory with biggest threat coming in the shape of Aratus who had won last 4 starts.

.

Fontwell 5.40 Bet365 Handicap Chase

Selection – Marracudja – 10 year old Gelding out of Martaline and Memorial. Has had 45 career starts winning 7 times. Was 2nd at Ascot on the 28th March when beaten 4 lengths by Defi Sacre over 2m 5f 8y. Although hasn’t been the most prolific horse to follow, has at times showed Class in certain races and should give another good account today. Biggest danger to the selection comes in the shape of Itacre who won last time out at Auteuil.

.

Jamie –

Newmarket –
1:45 – British EBF Premier Fillies Handicap – Selection: State Occasion

14 go to post for this nice pot with £25.7k going to the winners. There is some potentially great value in this race for the punters and the step up to 1m 2f looks like it will suit State Occasion judging by the way the daughter of Iffraaj has been finishing her races over a mile. State Occasion has only run twice so far in 2021 so her Handicap mark is still relatively low. A solid third at Lingfield in a similar race was a pleasing effort considering it was her first race for 10 months, Ensemble who finished second reaposes today. She stayed on well to finish second at Ascot four weeks ago last time out, where apparently she had more to give and their is plenty of hope today as she is a sister to a smart 1m 2f winner. The unexposed Swoon is one to keep an eye on in this fascinating race.

2:55 – Sun Chariot Stakes (G1) – Selection: Mother Earth

1000 Guineas hero Mother Earth heads a typically competitive renewal of this Group 1 for the Fillies & Mares. I think Mother Earth is rock solid and on a course she clearly handles well she could well be hard to stop today. Things didn’t go the way of Aidan O’Brien’s multiple G1 winner in the Matron Stakes last time out. She met interference from eventual winner No Speak Alexander and was eased down to finish third. It was a rough race and I am confident Mother Earth will reverse the form today on a fairer and more stamina sapping course. Good ground suits her fine and she will not be far away on all known form. Snow Lantern is the big danger, a Filly with a lot of talent. Fev Rover could go well at a big e/w price.

Ascot –
2.40 Cumberland Lodge Stakes – Group 3 – 3yo+ – 1m 4f…

Hukum – Sea the Stars X Aghareed 4yo gelding.
The 2020 St Leger Stakes 5th place has had 6 runs in 2021, winning 3 times including a pair of Group 3 races. The Geoffrey Freer Stakes ( 1m 5f 61yds) on August 14th & The Silver Cup Stakes (1m 5f) at Newbury on July 10th.
Finished a runner up last time out on September 4th at Kempton in the September Stakes by a neck to Hamish. Top Rated 114.
