Today has 3 races for Fillies’ & Mares’ with the Queen Mary Stakes for 2yo Only, Duke of Cambridge Group 2 & the Kensington Palace Handicap, Class 2 alongside the Queen’s Vase Group 2 for 3yo Only. Prince of Wales’ Group 1, Windsor Castle 2yo Listed Stakes & the Royal Hunt Cup, Class 2 Handicap….
The GOING at Ascot is – Good to Firm, Good in Places…
As per yesterday, the 4 of us are here, so let’s get Day 2 under starters orders….
3.40 Duke Of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2)
Selection- Double Or Bubble – 4 year old Filly out of Exceed And Excel and Mango Lady. Has had 4 starts so far beginning with a 3/4 of a length defeat to Mr Kiki at Yarmouth on the 8th August 2019. Next race wouldn’t be until August 2020 at Sandown when making a winning reappearance at the expense of Model Guest who was beaten 1/2 a length into 2nd place. Was sent to Ascot for next start on the 4th September and won again beating Sunset Breeze by a neck. Next start was on the 13th April this year at Newmarket when winning again beating Symbolize by 3 and 3/4 of a length. Has shown progress with every run so far and may still have some potential left in the tank. If race is ran to a decent pace should be involved again here, biggest danger to the selection comes in the shape of Lady Bowthorpe who has previously won here before.
6.10 Kensington Palace Stakes (Handicap)
Selection – Lights On -4 year old filly out of Siyouni and In The Light. Has ran 6 times winning winning 3 times and placing 3 times. The wins have came at Newcastle, Nottingham and Ascot, the places have came at Leicester, Musselburgh and Kempton. Lights On started off with a 7 and 1/2 length 2nd place behind Stunning Beauty at Leicester on the 10th August 2020. Was then sent to Newcastle on the 3rd September 2020 and won beating Tilly Frankl by 1 and 1/2 lengths. Musselburgh was next destination on the 27th September 2020 and was beaten a neck by Dawaaween. Was sent to Kempton on the 2nd November and finished 3rd behind River Dawn and Manton Grange. Was sent to Nottingham on the 27th April this year and won, beating Crystal Casque by 2 and 3/4 of a length. Was sent to Ascot for latest start on the 8th of May and won, beating Dreamloper by a short head with Poets Lady a further 3 lengths adrift in 3rd. Has been in good form of late and another bold display can’t be ruled out, biggest threat to the selection comes in the shape of Dreamloper who Lights On beat here last time out.
2.30 Queen Mary Stakes
I’ve looked back on Twilight Gleaming’s run at Belmont last month and was very impressed. She built on her debut effort and seemed suited to a fast turf surface over the minimum trip, something that she will once again get here. Wesley Ward has not hidden his regard for this filly and the yards 2yo’s over 5f are always respected. She could just be too good for the rest this afternoon.
5.00 Royal Hunt Cup
Haqeeqy looked a group horse in the making when landing the Lincoln earlier this season, he then run a fair race when 4th here at listed level. It doesn’t look a bad effort now given Oh This Is Us followed up at Epsom and Sir Busker finished 3rd here yesterday in the Queen Anne. He could have more in the tank after just 7 starts to date and appears to be drawn on the right side given current conditions. As usual, shop around for best place terms in what is a typically competitive renewal..
3:40 – Duke of Cambridge Stakes (G2) – Selection: Champers Elysees
Champers Elysees comes into this race off the back of two below par runs this season at the Curragh. Two fourths in the Athasi & Lanwades Stud Stakes isn’t the ideal preparation for this race but there are reasons to believe she can bounce back to top form. We all know how good she is on her day, with that brilliant Matron Stakes victory still fresh enough in the mind. I think racing on a surface for the first time since that Leopardstown triumph will really help her. I also suspect that those two Curragh runs were just to blow the cobwebs away and Johnny Murtagh has pinpointed this race as the big early season target. If they go a good gallop that would also help as she can pick them off late in the day. At the prices she makes a cracking each way bet, she is the wrong price, surely?
4:20 – Prince of Wales’ Stakes (G1) – Selection: Love
I’m siding with Champion Filly Love to notch up a fifth win at Group One level against reigning Champion Lord North. It may seem an obvious selection but I was never going to leave Love out of my picks for today. Last year Aidan O’Brien’s Filly was the clear standout 3yo and romped her way to a Group One treble, notably completing the 1000 Guineas & Oaks double. We haven’t seen Love since the Yorkshire Oaks last year, she was due to run in the Arc but heavy ground forced her out. Lord North is a big danger with a run under his belt but if Love is near her best then she will take some stopping on ground that she likes. Don’t forget that she receives the 3lb weight allowance for being a Filly. This is arguably Ballydoyle’s best chance of a winner this week.
3.05 Queens Vase – Group 2 – 3yo Only – 1m 6f 37yds….
Wordsworth – Galileo X Chelsea Rose Colt.
The Galileo colt finished 2nd on race course debut over 1m at the Curragh last August, beaten 3/4’s of length by High Definition.
Off for 238 days before making his seasonal return a winning one on April 17th. He stepped up in trip to 1m 2f at the Curragh & won by 2 lengths. He again finished 2nd on his last start before today as he stepped up in trip again to 1m 5f in a Navan Class 1 Listed race, narrowly beaten by a neck from Sir Lucan on May 15th….
3.40 Duke of Cambridge Stakes – Fillies’ & Mares’ Group 2 – 4yo+ – 1m…
Lady Bowthorpe – Nathaniel X Maglietta Fina 5yo mare.
The C&D winner finished closest to Palace Pier in the Group 1 Lockinge, when finishing a 1/2 length 2nd. She had won at Newmarket on May 2nd when landing the 1m Dahlic Stakes (Fillies’ & Mares’) by a head from Queen Power, who franked the form when stepping up in trip to 1m 2f in the Group 2 Middleton Stakes at York on May 13th. Palace Pier won again yesterday.
Her C&D win came last July when landing the 1m Group 3 Vailiant Fillies’ Stakes. She is Top Rated 117, with Queen Power at 113, who drops back 2f in trip….
That is everything for you today folks, a huge thanks for popping by & for your continued support, we really appreciate it…
