Today is Derby & Oaks trials day over at Gulfstream, building up to the Kentucky Derby day in a few weeks time. All the Graded races are Grade 3, which is a step above a standard stakes contest & they are worth $100,000…..

The racing gets under way early but the stakes races really kick off at 6.10pm…. The races in between are maidens & claimers, so let’s get things started….
Fresh from his Pegasus winner last Saturday, Charlie returns, while Rich had to settle for a 25/1 place & will be banking on better….

Charlie – 4.45 The opening race is a Claiming Race over 4f 219y. Normally I would swerve this kind of race, but one that caught my eye was Star Weaver, having already won twice here over 5f, makes debut for new Trainer Michael Maker has Irad Ortiz Jr on top and looked interesting at around the 9/2 at time of writing, could easily go in again here with the main threat coming in the shape of the Wesley Ward runner No Bang No Broom who is partnered with John Velasquez. I fully expect these two to dispute for 1st and 2nd position in this race.

.

7.10 Claiborne Farm Swale Stakes (Grade 3)

By George – Won in very comfortable style on debut at Aqueduct in December beating Too Boss by 5 lengths, makes step up into a tougher race for 2nd start but if showing a similar performance here could well go in again, main danger comes in the shape of Drain The Clock who beat Tiger here last month by 8 lengths, Poppy’s Pride should follow those two home for 3rd.

.

8.46 Forward Gal Stakes (Grade 3)

Coach Jer’s Joy Won here in October last year beating Sheza Happy Girl and recorded a fast time in the process, steps up in grade here and should go close with the main threat coming from the Favourite Zaajel who won on her debut here in December when beating Unbridled D’Oro by 7 lengths. I can’t see anything else getting between these two and both should finish in the first 2 places.

Rich –

Race 4 – 6.10pm – Kitten’s Joy Stakes – 3yo Only – Grade 3 – 1m….TURF

Never Surprised – Constitution x Tiz Dixie 3yo Colt.
2 from 2 & Todd Pletcher’s colt was a nice winner last time out on November 28th, when having a wide draw in a Stakes race over 1m 110yds at Aquaduct, made nice headway before putting the race to bed from the favourite in the final 2f, with the front 2 well clear of the field….

Race 6 – 7.10pm – Swale Stakes – 3yo Only – Grade 3 – 7f…. DIRT

Poppy’s Pride – Khozan x Lovely Lexi 3yo Gelding.
Has won his last 4 starts, including 2 at this course, 1 at Gulfstream(West) and last time out when landing a 6f Tampa Bay Stakes race, when bursting from the gates & leading the field from start to finish. Takes a step up in grade today but he has won over 1m at this course on the turf & 6f 110yds on sloppy track so the distance is no issue, the closers are if he doesn’t put the race to bed….

Race 9 – 8.46pm – Forward Gal Stakes – 3yo Only – Grade 3 – 7f…. DIRT

Zaajel – Street Sense x Asiys 3yo Filly.
A debut win here over the distance on the turf & now makes dirt debut, her win in a maiden over 7f was visually impressive on December 20th. Taking up the race from the bend to romp home from the Favourite, who was disappointing.
That said, she kept up a strong gallop to the line.
There are a couple of DANGER’s to Zaajel, with Coach Jer’s Joy, who was a 6f maiden winner on the west track, on a wet dirt track, having made hard work of the race to get up in the final furlong and the other is Competitive Speed, who has won the last 3 starts, including over 6f 110yds on January 2nd at this course, when having to grind out the win & could spring a surprise here….

Race 11 – 9.50pm – Holy Bull Stakes – 3yo Only – Grade 3 – 1m 110yds….. DIRT

Amount – Curlin x Extent 3yo Colt.
Landed the odds on race course debut at this course over 7f. He sat in mid division before rounding the front 3 on the bend, 3 wide, to cruise up & lead under a really nice hands n heels ride to win comfortably. He is 1 of 2 runners for Todd Pletcher, with Prime Factor, who is likely to go off favourite for the big race…
