Welcome to today’s racing blog from Arseonlineracing….
Jamie & Chris have your national hunt needs covered, Rich has a couple on the all weather….
1:30 – Wincanton – Handicap Hurdle (C3) – Selection: Take Your Time
An interesting race in prospect here as some potentially smart young horses clash with older more battle hardened horses. The top two in the market could well be the absolute cream of this race and I am going to side with Take Your Time. Paul Nichols’ inmate didn’t jump fluently at all when second at Chepstow last month but still the expected improvement to his connections. The time before then he had opened his account at Lingfield in what was a fairly ordinary novice hurdle. The step up in trip could well bring about more improvement but I hope to see him jump more fluently as this is the best race on paper he has contested so far. If he does that then he should not be far away. At a big price Thunderstruck could go well for Daryl Jacob and nick some e/w money.
2:10 – Lingfield – Betway Handicap (C2) – Selection: Scarlet Dragon
The highlight of today’s card at Lingfield is this Class 2 handicap for the stayers with some nice types turning out here. After a decent fourth over C+D last time out I am going to select Scarlet Dragon here to find some improvement on the polytrack and strike a first win since his famous Royal Ascot success. Hollie Doyle gets on very well with Alan King’s imposing son of Sir Percy and having been dropped 4lb by the handicapper, he should be right in the mix. I am hopeful that his recent run here will bring him on a bit after a 96 day break. This won’t be easy though off joint top weight. The Ian Williams pair of Cardano & Autumn War look ready to strike off a low weight.
3:10 – Chepstow – Welsh Grand National – Selection: Truckers Lodge
Some things just never change and the Welsh National being contested on brutally heavy ground is one of them. With form on heavy ground and having went close last year, Truckers Lodge looks a good bet if you want a run for your money. After finishing second in this great race last season, Paul Nichols knew that the Midlands National would be the race for him and so it proved to be as eased clear to win by nearly 20 lengths! Things didn’t go to plan at Kelso on his reappearance as he unseated Lorcan Williams some way from home. The lack of a recent run may concern some people but Nichols is one of the great masters at getting a horse ready for the big day. Everything looks set for another big effort from Truckers Lodge despite a 14lb rise for that Uttoxeter success.
2.20 Relkeel Hurdle
Not the most attractive of odds, but I can’t go against McFabulous in this rearranged renewal. A creditable 3rd in the Long Distance Hurdle last time out convinced connections that 3m is just a step too far, having led 2 out but found little to repel Thyme Hill and Paisley Park. No disgrace, but a return to this intermediate trip will suit and he is the one they all have to beat. Giving 3lb to the progressive Younevercall won’t be easy, but McFabulous seemed at home on at Kempton last March, and must be bang there on the run-in.
3.10 Welsh National Handicap Chase
Lord Du Mesnil entertained jumps enthusiasts during 2019-20, putting up some heroic efforts including going down all guns blazing in the National Hunt Chase at the Festival. His record over marathon trips in the mud is highly impressive, arriving here only 3lbs higher than when 2nd in the Grand National Trial at Haydock. 2 starts over inadequate trips can be forgiven this year as this was always marked out as his main target. At the time of writing, Lord Du Mesnil rates a solid each-way bet at the current prices, with several bookies currently paying 6 places.
