Another fantastic days racing, with so many close finishes… A quick recap of yesterday..
Charlie – Jalmoud -Unplaced
I Can Fly – 3rd
Temple Of Heaven – Unplaced
Jamie – Kimari 2nd, Anna Nerium, Seniorty
Lee – Magical 2nd…
Rich – Final Song 3rd, Jalmoud Unplaced & Pretty Baby Unplaced.
In our head to head…. Charlie won with Crystal Ocean, with Jamie & Magical in 2nd, while Rich & Sea of Class finished 4th…. Todays head to head is the last race of the day!
Head to Head – 5.35 King George V Stakes(Handicap)… Class 2… 3YO Only… 1m 4f…
Charlie – Sir Ron Priestley -Winner of last 2 races both over 1m 4f, first of those came in a Class 5 at Ripon when seeing off Babbo’s Boy by 6 lengths. Next win was at Haydock in a Class 3 seeing off Lariat by 3 and 3/4 lengths. This race has more depth to it and although Sir Ron Priestley comes here in good condition would need to step up once again and at 5-1 is too short for an eachway play so it’s gotta be a tentative win selection.
Rich – Questionare… All Weather winner on race course debut at Wolverhampton over 1m 1f 119yds on March 4th by a short head. Given a small break before turf debut on April 30th at Yarmouth over 1m 3f 104yds in a Class 3 Novice Stakes, finishing runner up by a neck. Finished runner up again last time out over 1m 4f at Leicester in a Class 3 Novice Stakes, beaten by a head but 5 lengths clear of 3rd… Wears first time cheek pieces!
Jamie – Constantinople
I am expecting a big run from this improving Galileo Colt. Admittedly
it will not be off top weight on soft ground, but I feel that he is a
group horse in a handicap. His last appearance saw him coming late
to win the Gallinule Stakes over the same trip. The way he finished
off the race suggested that a further step up in trip will suit him well.
The soft conditions are a slight concern, so I am hoping by 5:35pm
that it will have dried out a bit…
Right now lets get down to business and our thoughts for the rest of the card….
Charlie – 3.05 Sangarius -Won first 2 starts, first one was a neck victory over Bangkok at Newmarket over 7f in August last year. Next one came at Doncaster in September when beating Dubai Dominion by 2 and 1/4 lengths over 7f. Was then 4th on next start at Newmarket in October over 7f to Too Darn Hot who was some 9 lengths ahead. Was then put away for the winter before making seasonal return at Sandown on the 23rd May when finishing 3rd some 3 and 3/4 length behind the winner King Of Comedy over 1m. A repeat of that run should be enough to get involved here and if getting a good position could easily win this race in the closing stages.
3.40 – Fleeting – Was supplemented into this race just last week and Aidan O’brien has won this race 3 times in last 5 renewals. Last win came at Doncaster in September last year over 1m beating Star Terms by 1 and 1/2 lengths. Was disappointing in the 1,000 Guineas when tailed off. Hinted at a return to form when finishing 3rd in the Epsom Oaks at 25-1 on next start. If repeating the form shown at Epsom and when winning at Doncaster that should be enough to take this race and at 6-4 is today’s Nap.
2.30 – Norfolk Stakes – Air Force Jet
A red-hot renewal of the 5-furlong Norfolk stakes to kick off day 3. I
had heard nice things about Air Force Jet before he won his maiden
at Navan. The form of that race received a major boost when
Southern Hills (who was second that day) won the Windsor Castle.
The more the ground dries out the better and with top jockey Oisin
Murphy in the saddle, everything looks set for a big performance
from this Qatar racing owned Colt…
3.40 – Ribblesdale Stakes – Frankellina
This daughter of Frankel went into many people’s notebooks when
finishing an eye catching second in the Musidora up at York. Things
didn’t work out for her in the Epsom Oaks, although she did run well
enough to come home in sixth place. Back on a relatively flat track
which will suit her. She can get her head in front. She will need to
have improved from Epsom though to win this, but I think she will
have. My nap of the day…
4.20 – Ascot Gold Cup – Cross Counter
Yes, I am one of the seemingly few who are taking on the champ
Stradivarius, who I think faces his toughest task in taking on
Godolphin’s star stayer. I was really taken by the way that Cross
Counter soared home to land the Melbourne Cup. He doesn’t look a
grinder to me, he looks like a turn of foot horse who can sustain a
large burst of speed. If he replicates his Melbourne performance
then he will take some beating. It will be a race to saviour. One at a
big e/w price on soft ground could be Thomas Hobson, he loves
feeling the mud underfoot.
Final Word with Rich –
Cheers guys, great stuff picking the first two home in the big race, more of the same today!!
2.30 Norfolk Stakes… Group 2…. 2YO Only…. 5f…
Air Force Jet…. Charm Spirit colt, who was a runner up on race course debut in a Naas 5f Maiden by a short head on May 11th before winning a Navan 5f Maiden by a neck from Southern Hills, who won the Windsor Castle Stakes by 1/2 a length yesterday.
3.05 Hampton Court Stakes… Group 3… 3YO Only… 1m 2f…
Roseman…. Has only had 3 career runs starting with a debut 8 & 1/2 length 3rd over 1m in a Newbury Class 4 Maiden to Raise You before landing a Nottingham Class 5 Novice Stakes over 1m by 5 lengths on April 30th. Stepped up in class to contest the Class 1 Listed Heron Stakes at Sandown on May 23rd, when finishing runner up by 2 & 2/3 lengths to King of Comedy, who was a neck 2nd to Circus Maximus in the St James’ Stakes & Sangarius(In field) back in 3rd… Up in trip…
4.20 Ascot Gold Cup… Group 1… 2m 4f…
Stradivarius… Last years winner when beating Vazirabad by 3/4’s of a length looks to retain his crown. That win last season was part of 5 winning races for the season culminating on Champions Day when landing the Long Distance Cup. Won the Yorkshire Cup, Group 2 at York on seasonal return…. DANGER…. Cross Counter…Melbourne Cup winner who landed the Dubai Gold Cup in March…
5.00 Britannia Stakes(Handicap)… Class 2… 3YO Only… 1m…
Velorum… 2 length runner up to Skardu on race course debut in a Newmarket 7f Maiden last September. Made a winning seasonal return on May 17th, when stepping up to 1m at Newmarket in a Class 4 Novice Stakes by 1 & 1/4 lengths before making it 2-2 on May 30th in a Yarmouth 1m Class 5 Novice Stakes by 1 length. Handicap debut from opening mark of 96…
That concludes todays blog… Big thanks to everyone who has popped by and we hope to see you all again tomorrow…
