What a fantastic days racing yesterday, it had it all… Thrills, spills and a classic winner in Magna Grecia, which Rich put up in his Final Word column….
We have a quick round up of yesterday before we get stuck into Fillies’ day at Newmarket….
Charlie…. Madhmoon.could only manage to finish 4th, Awesome Tank won as expected and Thetrebar was an unlucky 2nd.
Rich…. Mabs Cross won the race she had won the year before, Coronet had a rare off day & finished outside the places. Magna Grecia landed the 2,000 Guineas in fine style while UAE Jewel won well and is one to follow this season
Not a bad day….
That’s all up to date, we best get on with todays thoughts including the 1,000 Guineas…
Newmarket 2.55 Gifted Master – Gifted Master won this race last year off the same mark, won the Stewards Cup at Goodwood in August last year . Finished 6th here on last start on 17th April some 4 and 1/2 lengths behind the winner Keystroke. That run can be forgiven and could gain compensation in this race with main threat coming in the shape of Flavius Titus who carries 4lb extra for winning here last time out.
Newmarket 3.35 1,000 Guineas… Fillies’ Group 1… 3YO Only… 1m….
Skitter Scatter – Hasn’t been out of the first 3 places in 7 runs and that’s a fantastic achievement in itself. Was 3rd of 7 on racecourse debut at Dundalk on the 28th March 2018 behind Jungle Jane. Returned to Dundalk on the 11th April 2018 and won over 5f beating Sergei Prokofiev by a short head. Was then stepped up to 6f at Naas and finished 3rd some 3 lengths behind Servalan. Was then sent to the Curragh to race over 6f in the Grangecon Stud Stakes Group 3 on the 1st July 2018 and finished 2nd to So Perfect. Was then sent to Leopardstown on the 26th July 2018 and won beating Moravia by 1 and 1/2 lengths. Was then sent to the Curragh on the 26th August to contest the Debutante Stakes Group 2 over 7f and won beating Bandiuc Eile by 2 and 1/4 lengths. Returned to the Curragh on the 16th September 2018 to contest the Moyglare Stud Stakes Group 1 over 7f and won again beating Lady Kaya by 2 lengths. Steps up in trip to 1m today and that should be within reach for Skitter Scatter who seems to be progressing with every run.
Newmarket 5.20 Never Do Nothing – Never Do Nothing was 3rd at Kempton over 1m in a Class 5 Auction on the 21st August 2018. Next race was at Thirsk in another Class 5 Auction over 1m on the 31st August 2018 and won beating Wolf Prince by 2 lengths. Next up was a Class 4 Auction at Pontefract on the 27th September over 1m and won again beating The Great Story by a neck. On latest run here on the 16th April was 3rd some 3 and 1/4 length behind Solid Stone In a Class 3 Handicap over 1m 2f. Should strip better here with that previous run behind it biggest threat comes from the pair of M Johnson runners Nayef Road and Fraser Island..
Well that’s my Thought’s on today’s selections, good luck if following and please remember to keep Stakes small so it doesn’t hurt your pocket. I will now hand you back over to Rich for the Final Word.
Final Word with Rich…
Thanks Charlie, what a day yesterday I hope today is more of the same but no 2 days are ever the same… Now it’s over to the Fillies’ & 1,000 Guineas day & there are some fine Fillies’ on show today, so lets get my thoughts from Newmarket…
2.55 Handicap… Class 2… 6f..
FLAVIA TITUS…. The C&D winner won on seasonal return just 19 days ago here when landing a class 2 handicap by a neck & has been raised 4 for the win, which was the first run for 193 days & now runs from a career high mark….
3.35 1,000 Guineas… Fillies’ Group 1… 3YO Only… 1m….
SKITTER SCATTER…. The Scat Daddy filly was last seen on September 16th at the Curragh when winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Fillies’ Stakes over 7f by 2 lengths having improved for each run. Started the season over 5f at Dundalk in a maiden finishing 2nd before winning next time out from Sergi Prokofiev. Went up in trip and through the Group ranks during the season winning Jockey Club Fillies’ at Leopardstown & the Debutante Stakes at the Curragh on the way to winning the Group 1 in September. Makes seasonal return & is up in trip….
I put up Qabala on April 16th who got the better of stable companion Mot Juste by 1 & 3/4 lengths to land the Nell Gwyn Group 3 Stakes but I think this step up could be too soon for the Scat Daddy filly….
So my DANGER is Star Terms. The Sea the Stars filly was only beaten by a head in 3rd in the Prix Marcel Boussac (Fillies’ Group 1)last October and came on for her run last season, so having already finished a 1 length 4th in the Group 3 Fred Darling 7f at Newbury last month she could run a huge race at a nice price……
4.45 Pretty Polly Stakes… Fillies’ Class 1 Listed… 3YO Only… 1m 2f…
MAQSAD…. Finished runner up on race course debut over 7f at this course last September in a class 4 maiden before stepping up to the mile at Yarmouth & finishing 3rd in a class 4 novice stakes. With 1st & 2nd since winning on seasonal return and boosting the form, Maqsad made a winning seasonal return on April 18th again in a class 4 maiden at this course by a short head. Now takes a step up in class & trip….
That is everything for you today folks… We will see what we have for Bank Holiday Monday & keep you posted via Twitter if we will be posting a blog…
All the Best – Charlie & Rich
